Mentorship
Art is a lineage; we learn best through apprenticing and individual mentorship. We need real community to succeed and thrive.
I take on a limited number of students each year. My college-prep students are usually in their sophomore, junior or senior years of high school, but older or younger students are also welcome; the individual nature of the work allows me to cater to a wide range of needs and goals.

First:Assess
My first meeting with a student is an informal portfolio review and chat. We get to know each other, talk about where the student is at, what their interests are. From this, I build out lesson plans catered to the student's goals and time tables. Younger students are likely to move into a course of skill-building assignments, while seniors in high school will usually move directly into college prep.

Then,Research & Prepare
As students approach college application time, we kick into high gear for college prep. We'll dig into researching schools to find 3-5 best choices, based on majors, location, financials, etc. We'll begin portfolio prep specific to our chosen schools.
|
Finally, weApply
Many students (and their parents!) find college applications terrifying. Don't worry, we got this. We'll walk through every step of this together, including references, entrance essays, and portfolio. Once responses from schools arrive, we'll consider all the options and begin the process of enrollment, registration, and preparing for freshman year.

details
Each student has individual needs, but generally we meet once a week for 1-3 hours depending on what we are working on at the time. We meet either at my home studio in SW Portland or my working studio in NW Portland. Rates are flat at $70/hour, invoiced monthly.
Benefits of Mentorship
The benefits of individual training and mentorship are deep and far-reaching. Private training and attention vastly improves a student's skill set, confidence and critical thinking ability. Mentorship and guidance from an older practitioner gives a young artist a sense of community, as well as a resource to ask questions and voice concerns they otherwise would not have an outlet for. These relationships often extend beyond class time; my students are always free to contact me with questions and concerns.
As a student prepares for college, it is invaluable to have experienced guidance to walk them through the process; the student is able to approach college with confidence and purpose, and their parents are able to relax and know that college prep and application is being taken care of. I create projects specifically geared towards the portfolio requirements of each of the student's chosen schools, help them craft their entrance essays, and write them strong letters of recommendation. My students generally get admitted to one of their first choice schools and receive significant scholarships.

Expectations of students
I can only take on a limited number of students each year, and as such am selective about whom I will mentor; it is important that I am a good fit for each student's goals. This does not mean that a student has to be an art prodigy; it does mean that they must be dedicated, committed and ready to work hard. I prepare my students for success, but this only works if they are ready to put in the time and effort.
